about

Traditional

While hitchhiking out of Mitown Malbay, I learned this song from Paddy Anderson of Killinchy, Co. Down and Stephen Owens of Liverpool. They told me that they had sung it for a production of James Joyce's "The Dead." (Lads, keep your friends close and your drinks closer.) Revised note: this recording went on to be used in the soundtrack of the film "The One-Eyed King," starring William Baldwin and Armand Assante.

lyrics

If you'll be the lass of Aughrim
As I'll take you to be
Tell me that first token
That passed between you and me

Oh, don't you remember
That night on yon lean hill
When we both met together
I am sorry now to tell

Oh, the rain falls on my yellow locks
And the dew soaks my skin
My babe lies cold in my arms
Lord Gregory, let me in

Oh, the rain falls on my heavy locks
And the dew soaks my skin
My babe lies cold in my arms
But none will let me in
